I saw an article on this topic on Warisboring and I thought I’d float it here.

It’s an interesting point. It’s not like Russian planes are on par with the latest US or Western European fighters, if the J20 is as big of a deal as China is making it out to be, why would they be buying Russian jets?

Because the j20 is not so good at flight.

China still has a long way to go on engine design. While the J20 may have some cool features, the Chinese WS-15 Turbofan (which was designed to power the J20) is nowhere near maturity.
Russian aircraft, while outdated compared most Western designs, are rugged, reliable, and capable. An Su-35 has little to fear when it comes to fighting Phillipine or Vietnamese aircraft. The J20 has alot to fear flying out over the open ocean with domestically produced engines.

On the contrary

I agree that it’s China lagging in engine design. The Chinese Y-20 transport uses Russian sourced low bypass turbofans!

Chinese aircraft are effectively Hennessey Venoms. They need a pre built base to go off from.

Arguably that’s just falling that starts in an upward direction.

You just completely changed my worldview.

Physics. Gravity is always acting; everything is falling unless something is pushing it up. It just takes gravity a little bit to catch up when it doesn’t start accelerating from zero upwards velocity.
